Over the course of a weekend, we enter the lives of two deeply flawed, yet sympathetic characters – GRAYSON and RACHEL. Once high school sweethearts, they have since grown apart and taken very separate paths. Grayson works in Portland, Maine as an investment banker, and Rachel lives in Brooklyn as a fashion photographer’s assistant. When Grayson has a delayed layover, he decides to contact Rachel after five years of silence. But when he misses his morning flight, one night turns into a weekend. Rachel is forced to allow Grayson into her hectic city life, filled with promiscuity, music, art, ex-lovers and opportunistic friendships. Nazi occupied Poland during 1943. Having just narrowly escaped from a Nazi concentration camp, seven year old Avi Milner races desperately through a thick forest while actively being pursued by SS officers carrying machine guns. He runs faster and faster, frantically trying to avoid capture. As Avi comes to a clearing, he decides to find shelter in a large, broken down barn in the distance. Inside the barn, he is discovered by a young girl, and both are frightened by the thought of being found: Avi by the Nazis and the girl by her abusive father. As the German soldiers begin combing the barn, Avi earnestly searches for a hiding spot. Several tense moments follow as Avi barely escapes detection by his evil pursuers. The little girl takes Avi up to her secret hide-away loft inside the barn. These two children are from different countries, different religions, and different worlds, which creates a certain tension between them. They speak two different languages, forcing them to convey their thoughts through simple gestures, proving actions do speak louder than words. Through their time together they ultimately rediscover a little bit of humanity left in a world filled with evil and hatred. These two abused children overcome immense danger, and in their fight for survival, form a common bond of hope and trust.
